The revolutionary zeal that had recently created the United States and had taken off Louis XVI's head in France arrived in South America, and a racially diverse group of people who felt more South American than European took over. John covers the soft revolution of Brazil, in which Prince Pedro boldly seized power from his father, but promised to give it back if King João ever returned to Brazil. He also covers the decidedly more violent revolutions in Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina. It discusses the days leading up to the revolution, which many saw as the beginning of democracy in Cuba. Then it shows the consequences of Castro's actions after he won power, and the world's response to his communist regime. Historical Background: The Cuban Revolution (1953-1959) was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement and its allies against the U.S.-backed authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. The revolution began in July 1953, and continued sporadically until the rebels finally ousted Batista on 1 January 1959, replacing his government with a revolutionary socialist state. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along communist lines, becoming the Communist Party in October 1965. The Cuban Revolution had powerful domestic and international repercussions. In particular, it reshaped Cuba's relationship with the United States. Efforts to improve diplomatic relations have gained momentum in recent years. In the immediate aftermath of the revolution, Castro's government began a program of nationalization and political consolidation that transformed Cuba's economy and civil society. The United States government initially reacted favorably to the Cuban revolution, seeing it as part of a movement to bring democracy to Latin America. Castro's legalization of the Communist party caused a deterioration in the relationship between the two countries. The promulgation of the Agrarian Reform Law, expropriating thousands of acres of farmland, further worsened relations. In February 1960, Castro signed a commercial agreement with Soviet Union. In March 1960, Eisenhower gave his approval to a CIA plan to arm and train a group of Cuban exiles to overthrow the Castro regime. The invasion (known as the Bay of Pigs Invasion) took place on April 14, 1961. About 1,400 Cuban exiles disembarked at the Bay of Pigs, but failed in their attempt to overthrow Castro. In January 1962, Cuba was suspended from the Organization of American States (OAS), and later the same year the OAS started to impose sanctions against Cuba of similar nature to the US sanctions. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962. By 1963, Cuba was moving towards a full-fledged Communist system modeled on the Soviet Union. My first of a potential series, assuming I have time to regularly update. Hope this entertains and educates. EDUTAINMENT TO THE MAX. Here's a transcript in case you don't understand me and want to learn! "In 1952,former Cuban President Fulgencio Batista, ran for re-election but instead of waiting for the votes to be counted, decided to just stage a military coup. During his first presidency in 1940, he was progressive and passed social reforms, but during his 2nd presidency he was a military tyrant who installed a police state, executed thousands of political opponents, allowed the American Mafia to build casinos all over Havana, and was a pawn of US businesses, all the while the Cuban people lived in poverty. Then came this dude named Fidel Castro, who came from a prosperous family, went to private schools, and then studied law at the University of Havana. He became heavily involved in reform movements and was accused of a couple political assassinations but never proven guilty. DUN DUN DUNNNN. On July 26, 1953, Castro and around 100 rebels attacked the Moncada Barracks hoping to cause an uprising. It failed horribly, half the rebels got killed and Fidel got captured. There were many protests to free Castro and Batista hoped to gain favor with the people by releasing him. Stupid! Castro fled to Mexico to rebuild and reorganize. There he met up with Che Guevara and they formed the July 26 Movement. In 1956, they made it back into Cuba and setup basecamp in the Sierra Maestra mountains. From there they waged guerilla warfare against Batistas forces while gaining more support from the Cuban people. Batistas forces were mostly inexperienced and many defected to the rebel side anyway. In 1958 Castro's forces started pushing towards the capital of Santa Clara and Batista fled to the Dominican Republic. Castro was made prime minister, told the people there would be elections after the revolution was truly over, and he has been dictator ever since."

On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries overthrew Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista, who fled to the Dominican Republic. STORYLINE: These pictures show scenes of turmoil in the capital Havana, as the climax of revolution was reached. The mob was out of hand. At-last, Dr Fidel Castro himself arrived. Time and again, he was held up by the crowds. He spoke to them of the new regime now being inaugurated: a regime, now formally recognised by Britain. "A revolution is a struggle to the death between the future and the past." - Fidel Castro (13th August 1926 – 25 November 2016) On 1st January 1959, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara led a revolution against the hated Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Almost 58 years later, after decades of attempts by US imperialism to strangle Cuba, Fidel Castro has passed away - on 25th November 2016) and the all gains of the Revolution remain under threat. In this video from the LSE Marxist society, Jorge Martin - editor of the Marxist magazine, America Socialista - discusses the life and legacy of Fidel Castro and the perspectives for the Cuban Revolution today. What are the problems facing Cuba today? How do we defend the gains of the Cuban revolution? And what is the way forward in the fight for socialism in Cuba and internationally?
